Closer (2004) by Mike Nichols
CHARACTERS:
Natalie Portman as Alice, a pink-wig wearing stripper & more.
Jude Law as Dan, a writer but a romantic.
Julia Roberts as Anna, a well known photographer.
Clive Owen as Larry, a dermatologist with an edge.
The reason why this is one of my favorite films of all time is because it encompasses a thrill. You must scoot in a little bit closer to see and understand these characters on the screen. They are a little bit more than just their lines. All these characters, Alice, Dan, Anna, and Larry have such complex lives. Love is at heart and play is their frisky game. Downfall? Hmmm… Not because of their intertwined troubled relationships. It is the intensity in all their eyes. What is the next move . . . ? Their next gathering together . . . ? The next kinky message online. . . ? Their odd coincidence is only their awakenings and destined desired paths
laid out before us.
The film follows in artful cool tones with early minimal digital fashion. Think of 2004 style but in black and white. As the camera skills captures dramatic raw shots. It seems as though everything in this film was meant to be. It is more than an emotional art rollercoaster “romance”.
The soundtrack is fantastic— you could only get lost in Closer, 2004. I totally recommend this movie to anyone I know. I will leave you with one or two quotes. . . from the film I believe . . .
“Love is an accident... waiting to happen. Desire is a stranger... you think you know. Intimacy is a lie we tell ourselves. Truth is a game . . . you play to win. If you believe in love at first sight, you never stop looking” (Closer 2004).
“You don’t know the first thing about love, because you don’t understand compromise” (Closer 2004).
Thank you

A song from the film . . .
Being happy is more or less what we're looking for
I like to laugh, sing and all the same
Not people who are good to be cheerful
Yet if it is a samba without sadness
It’s a wine that doesn’t make you drunk.
A wine that does not make you drunk
No, it's not the samba that I want
